Before buying refurbished electronics

Definitions vary by seller

‘Open box,’ ‘refurbished’ and ‘renewed’ are not universal standards. Ask who inspected the device, what was replaced, and what accessories are included. A product can look pristine while having meaningful battery wear.

For wireless devices, check whether the manufacturer still provides firmware updates and whether the product can be reset and removed from the previous owner’s account.

What to keep in writing

Verify the exact model number, serial-number policy, condition description, battery-health standard where applicable, return window, warranty provider, and shipping responsibility. If those details are unavailable, the low price may not compensate for the uncertainty.
